Christ is risen! He is truly risen! Praised be Jesus Christ and Mary His Most Holy Mother!
On Friday, May 16, 2014, our beloved St. Paul the Apostle parish celebrated our Spring Gala dinner. The evening was a wonderful evening with so many of our parishioners “coming home.” I cannot adequately express gratitude to the Dinner Committee and to all who were present, all who took ads in the journal, and all who contributed to the Silent Auction. May God reward each and every one of you. We must thank Mr. Owen Smith and our friends and neighbors at the Milleridge Inn for all they did for us that evening and always throughout the years.
The Dinner was a greater success than anyone could ever have imagined. When I say that I am not referring to “financial” success but to the success of our parish family coming together. What a joy for me as pastor of the parish, to see so many parishioners who came out in such numbers.
On the morning of our Spring Gala Dinner I had delivered a large amount of food to the Novitiate of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Queens Village (where I lived from 2000 to 2013). The food was from the Knights of Columbus. Today (Tuesday, May 20th) I delivered all the leftover food from the Communion Breakfast. You have always been so generous to the Little Sisters and they pray for all the parishioners of St. Paul. When I told the Little Sisters of the Spring Gala Dinner which would be later that day and informed them of the forecast of terrible storms, they assured me that they would be praying to St. Joseph for the aversion of storms. Through the goodness of St. Joseph our Dinner began without rain and when many were leaving the rain had already stopped. It was St. Joseph’s gift to us parishioners.
The evening is one I will never forget. May God bless all of you.
SPRING AT ST. PAUL’S: This season of Spring has brought a glorious renewal to our parish. We had two glorious First Holy Communions and our Communion children were enrolled in the Brown Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Mothers’ Day. On May 10th Bishop Andrzej confirmed 52 of our eighth graders. Bishop Andrzej remarked to me how impressed he was by the goodness of our parishioners and the reverence of our children.
On May 18th our Marian Guild and Knights of Columbus participated in the Crowning of Our Blessed Mother which was followed by the Communion Breakfast. Deacon David Atanasio was our guest speaker and gave us a very memorable and uplifting morning. Deacon David will be ordained a priest on June 14, 2014. Pray that he will be a holy priest after Our Lord’s own Heart who will bring many souls to heaven.
ST. PHILIP NERI On Monday May 26th the Church celebrates the liturgical memorial of St. Philip Neri. As everyone knows by now St. Philip is my favorite saint. His image and relic adorn the Daily Mass Chapel. When I was a student in Rome (over 20 years ago) I would visit his tomb every day. I used to treat myself to an afternoon walk in the City and would always wind up at his tomb in the Chiesa Nuova. Next week’s bulletin article will be devoted to St. Philip, as our saint of the month.
MEMORIAL DAY: This weekend we observe Memorial Day when we pray for and thank God for the service of those in the armed forces of our nation. The day began as a day when the graves of our fallen soldiers would be adorned with spring flowers. Thus the original name of the holiday, Decoration Day. (My good father always called the holiday “Decoration Day” until the day of his death 21 years ago. But he also called any sound system the “Victrola.”) May God bless my fellow veterans and all who have served in the armed forces of our nation.
ASCENSION THURSDAY: Thursday of this week is Ascension Thursday, a Holyday of Obligation. Be sure to see the bulletin for Mass times.
Benedicat Virgo Maria!
In Jesus and Mary,
Monsignor James F. Pereda
